  20. This is the welcome message and FAQ for
  21.  
  22. alt.binaries.pictures.fine-art.d
  23. alt.binaries.pictures.fine-art.graphics
  24. alt.binaries.pictures.fine-art.digitized

  26. These groups all deal with the use of computer graphics and computer
  27. digitization in art.  These are all moderated groups.
  28.  
  29. The two alt groups are for the posting of digitized files.
  30. These materials are also being made available via FTP for those sites
  31. not receiving the alt groups.
  32.  
  33. alt.binaries.pictures.fine-art.graphics is for those pictures done using
  34. computer graphics programs.
  35.  
  36. alt.binaries.pictures.fine-art.digitized is 
  37. for people who have made paintings, drawings, prints, etc. 
  38. and wish to distribute reproductions of same. 
  39. Thus those who have used "conventional media" to produce their art work
  40. and wish to digitize same and share this with us, will have their
  41. material posted in this group.

  43. Pictures will be accepted in 
  44. any reasonable format including IFF, TIF, GIFF and JPEG.   We will attempt
  45. to convert formats such as BMP to GIFF or JPEG, unless indicated otherwise.
  46. Some readers complained when I sent a BMP file.

  48. (If we are unable to view the picture with our hardware/software environment, 
  49. we may ask the contributor to mail us slides or other similar hardcopy so that 
  50. we can perform our moderation.)

  52. alt.binaries.pictures.fine-art.d
  53. will be a discussion group for both of the
  54. above picture groups.  For each entry in
  55. alt.binaries.pictures.fine-art.graphics and
  56. alt.binaries.pictures.fine-art.digitized
  57. the poster will send a short biography and any other information
  58. associated with the drawing.

  60. The biography should include:

  62. a) name
  63. b) education
  64. c) affiliation
  65. d) physical mail address
  66. e) electronic mail address
  67. f) exhibition record (optional)
  68. g) age (optional)

  70. This is intended to be the same sort of information that would be
  71. included in art book.

  73. A long-term goal would be to assemble an art book and/or a CD-ROM
  74. based on the work submitted.  (Of course, we would request the consent
  75. of each poster prior to including their work.)  This would include
  76. the possible non-profit distribution to art departments worldwide.

  78. People wishing to discuss the use of computer graphics in fine arts
  79. may submit their postings to alt.pictures.fine-art.d

  104. local art department about our services.  Most artists are NOT on
  105. the net and you are probably the only way that the artists you know
  106. will hear about us.   We would also appreciate it if you would offer to
  107. help them with such tasks as obtaining an account with access to USENET,
  108. reading and posting news, uploading files and performing the digitization.

  113. The following are answers to some of the questions raised during the
  114. original call for discussion.   We feel these may be concerns of new
  115. subscribers and potential posters.  We thus include these issues.
  116.  
  117. 1) Copyright protection
  118. Please don't post any material that you haven't done yourself.  This is
  119. to avoid copyright problems.   In other words, this is not the group
  120. to send your copies of the Mona Lisa or Van Gogh's works.
  121.  
  122. We are concerned that someone on the net might steal and plagiarize
  123. pictures distributed on this group.  In other words, some unscrupulous 
  124. individual might monitor these groups, download a picture, and then remove any
  125. signature with a paint program.  Then, they could submit the picture
  126. to a juried show or as homework in an art class.  That would be a risk
  127. that would be born by any contributor.  We trust that artists monitoring
  128. this group would be of fine character and never do something so
  129. dastardly.

  131. However, we strongly recommend that no individual contributor 
  132. distribute more than five drawings using these group.  This is also a 
  133. reason that we will be requiring the biographical information.  If
  134. someone wants to exchange more works, they can do this by private
  135. electronic mail.

  137. 2) What is art?
  138.  
  139. Someone asked, "What is art?"
  140.  
  141. We will not censor anything for posting.  However, we will limit the
  142. works to a manageable amount--in order not to swamp the net or those
  143. wishing to monitor these groups.
  144.  
  145. Of course, if we are making up a disk or publishing book, we will use our 
  146. discretion in choosing what will make the best possible publication.
  147.  
  148. 3) How do I view the art work?
  149.  
  150. There is a wonderful FAQ posting that deals with picture formats.

  152. It is posted regularly to alt.binaries.pictures.fine-art.d

  154. It is also available from a couple of mail servers.  For anonymous FTP access, 
  155. you can look on either rtfm.mit.edu  in the directory 
  156. /pub/usenet/news.answers, on archive.cs.ruu.nl [131.211.80.5] in directory 
  157. NEWS.ANSWERS, on cnam.cnam.fr [192.33.159.6] in directory /pub/FAQ, or on 
  158. ftp.uu.net [137.39.1.2 or 192.48.96.2] in directory /pub/usenet.  In all 
  159. cases, you'll want to get one or both of the FAQ parts named as files
  160. "pictures-faq/part1" and "pictures-faq/part2".  Both parts are also 
  161. available on bongo.cc.utexas.edu [128.83.186.13], in the gifstuff directory 
  162. as FAQ.abp.1 for part 1 and FAQ.abp.2 for part 2.
